In 2007, after lengthy exploration, researchers from Israel pinpointed a likely cause of epilepsy after brain injury. Now, in an exciting new study, they have successfully prevented this type of epilepsy in experimental models.

If a woman becomes pregnant whilst taking anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), there are certain risks to the unborn child that must be considered. Researchers in the UK and US have been looking at how exposure to AEDs in the womb can affect mental processing in the early years of life. Their interim results have now been published.

The brain is made up of thousands of groups of neurons, each with a different function. Methods of discovering these functions are currently highly invasive, which limits their use considerably. Scientists in America have developed a technique that could potentially overcome this problem.
