Revised clinical guidelines for the diagnosis
and management of epilepsy in adults were
published on 28 April 2003 by the Scottish
Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN).
These guidelines set new standards of healthcare
which, if implemented, would improve diagnosis
and treatment and would ensure that everyone
with epilepsy is given all the relevant
information needed to best cope with the
condition.
The original guidelines (published 1997)
made little impact on healthcare practice.
Epilepsy
Scotland will try to ensure that the
same cannot be said of these revised guidelines.
They are working with the leading clinicians
and NHS Boards to establish Managed Clinical
Networks which will use SIGN as the evidence
base for an effective service. They urge
everyone with epilepsy in Scotland to ask
their local NHS Board to implement these
Guidelines.
